Vampire Diaries...yeah I know

My wife is doing a marathon session of The Vampire Diaries on Netflix right now.  A lot of annoying screaming and chick whining.  There needs to be a vampire series that isn't filtered through the eyes of a whiny teenage girl.  Romance and vampires just don't seem to mix to me.  I'm reading The Passage by Justin Cronin and Descendant on my Kindle now and they are really good.  I just don't get why in Vampire Diaries the vampires just don't kill the main chick after all the trouble she has given them.  Just seems too unrealistic to go past two seasons.  And do these "high school kids" have parents at all?
