My Gaming Year Part 2
After the disappointments of the year, it's time to move on to some better experiences from this past year starting with Deus Ex Human Revolution. Part RPG and part action game, Deus Ex gave me a very satisfying experience this past year. The only thing that dragged this game down were the boss fights. In a game where you are expected to logically solve puzzles and manage scarce ammunition and limited inventory space, how on earth do bosses end up with unlimited ammo and grenades? It was totally out of character in relation to the rest of the game. But overall, the game is top notch and I recommend a playthrough to anyone.
Next up is Gears of War 3 and Portal 2. What else can really be said about these games that hasn't already been said. GOW3 lived up to all the hype and actually delivered a pretty touching story to go along with just stupid-good graphics. Portal 2 was the total package had the best writing of any game I played this year. The puzzles were tough but the game kept you coming back for more. I loved it and it is at or near the top of everyone's best of 2011 list.
Another game that was tough this year was Dark Souls. I'm still sitting on the fence with this one. The game's battle system is top notch but unlike portal I'm less and less inclined to come back for more abuse. Japanese RPGs are all about the grind. While I am impressed with the open world I need some gratification to keep on coming back to this game. I have it put aside for now with the hope of being able to come back and get through it but the game's difficulty is a big obstacle for me. And the fact that jumping in the game is so hard to execute! WTF!!??
Battlefield 3 is my shooter of choice this year as Modern Warfare 3 just looks too much like part 2. I agree with the internet trolls who say this years call of duty game might as well be called Modern Warfare 2.5 because it plays exactly the same. I am slowly advancing ahead in BF3 and the pace of the game does take some getting used to.I have realized that I can't be a lone wolf in this game or I'll get sniped real quick. My only gripe is snipers sitting at the edge of the map and campers sitting in your spawn.
